U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) organized the exercise Carpathian Spring 2013 at the Airlift Bases of Otopeni, Campia Turzii and Boboc in Romania, between April 12 and 21.
This building partnership capacity exercise was conducted by the 37th Airlift Squadron working under the 86th Operations Group, 86th Airlift Wing, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The squadron brought three C-130J Super Hercules and more than 30 Airmen from Ramstein to engage and share knowledge and tactics with Romanian Air Forces.
During the week of the exercise, the Airmen accomplished low-level flying through the Carpathian Mountains during the day and executed static line and halo jumps during night flights. Up to 65 Romanian paratroopers, coordinated by U.S. jumpmasters, participated in the exercise. This helps to create better interoperability and to strengthen NATO capabilities.
The exercise was part of the operational training opportunities offered by the Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in December 2005 by U.S. and Romanian officials allowing for U.S. forces to train in Romania.
