Mircea Brig at „The contest of the greatest sailing ships in Atlantic"

Bricul_Mircea_15.jpgYesterday, the school ship of „Mircea cel Bătrân" Academy left Constanţa Harbour to take part for the third time in "The contest of the greatest sailing ships in Atlantic" 

The crew is formed of 190 trainees and students of School of Marine Foremen and ten foreign cadets from Croatia, France, Turkey and USA, which will get back home on 1st of September. During this 6 month voyage, they will travel more than 12,500 miles and will cross the Black Sea, the Aegean and the Mediterranean, but also the North Atlantic Ocean. "The route includes the harbours Catania, Cadiz, Tenerife, Hamilton, Charleston, Boston, Ponta Delagada, Gibraltar and Iraklion, and the trainees and the students will have the opportunity of sailing the brig in three out of six boat race competitions within ‘The contest of the greatest sailing ships in Atlantic', in which Mircea school ship is taking part for the third time", said captain Mugur Lucian, spokesman of Mircea cel Bătrân Naval Academy. In 2008, Mircea brig had a 115 day training march in the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, North Sea and the Baltic Sea and took part in the festivities for the celebration of semi-centennial of its sister ship, the school ship of the German Marine, "Gorch Fock". Mircea school-ship was constructed during 1938 - 1939, by Şantierul Blohm und Voss shipyard in Hamburg - Germany, and in 2002, in Brăila Shipyard, went through his last capital repairing.
